Patented in 1902 by Louis Renault, the drum brake was the standard method of retardation for most road cars until the ‘70s.

These drum systems are still fitted to the rear of some vehicles today. While drums will survive several changes of shoes, if you are replacing your drums then it is recommended to change the shoes at the same time.
